Newland happy with track as jumping makes smooth return after investigation

Grand National-winning trainer Richard Newland said "everyone was happy" with the modifications made at Southwell after the course staged its first jumps meeting following the BHA investigation into the spate of racehorse deaths at the track this year.

Eight horses died at the venue between August and September, prompting the BHA and Southwell's owners Arena Racing Company to suspend jumps racing following the meeting on September 3, with the chase course coming under particular scrutiny.

Newland, who won the 2014 National with Pineau De Re and took the opening 3m½f handicap chase with Classic Escape, was pleased with the track.
