Owning racehorses can do funny things to you. Perfectly sane and logical people can turn into a bundle of nerves shortly before their own colours are carried on the racecourse – just ask Dave and Hayley Ashley.

Dave Ashley cut a solitary figure in the paddock before the race. He had entered the arena long before his horse Templehills was due to run in the 2m5f handicap chase as he tried to compose himself before the contest.

On the plus side he was able to watch Templehills come home in front under Sam Twiston-Davies, something his wife Hayley had not been able to do.
