Spider Web's remarkable rally foils Abu in dying strides

While last year's JT McNamara Munster National was a walk in the park for subsequent Ladbrokes Trophy winner Total Recall, the 2018 edition of the €100,000 staying contest was a different kettle of fish.

Na Trachtalai Abu, the 40-1 outsider of the field, appeared to have the race in safe keeping, only to be mown down in the dying strides by a remarkable late rally from Spider Web.

It was a delighted Luke Dempsey who returned to the winner's enclosure in the colours of JP McManus for trainer Tom Mullins after flying home to record the most unlikely of victories, with £23,614 for the runner-up being matched at 1.01 on the Betfair exchange. The winner was matched for pennies at an in-running high of 130 and £5 at 110.
