Mullins dethrones Weld to finish top trainer for first time

Dermot Weld was dethroned as leading trainer at Galway for the first time since 1997 as Willie Mullins' nine winners brought him the title for the first time.

Weld, the 29-time Galway champion before the start of the week, was priced up at 1-5 by Paddy Power to end the festival on top.

However, Mullins spoiled his annual party with 58 points, four more than the defending champion, thanks to the victories of Alelchi Inois and Devils Bride on Sunday that brought his seven-day haul to nine, three more than the hot favourite. In 31 years, Weld has been dethroned only twice – by Aidan O'Brien in 1997 and now Mullins.
