More targets needed for Katie Scott as Spartakos win adds to career-best tally
Tuesday: Catterick
Trainer Katie Scott has been forced to set new and loftier targets this season following a hard-fought victory for Spartakos in the 7f classified stakes.
Scott had already surpassed last year’s tally of nine winners and took her career-best total to 12 following the four-year-old's neck success and has therefore had to alter some of her ambitions for the better.
She said: "The target I set myself at the start of the year was 12 winners and a Saturday winner, but we have done both of those.
"We have had two winners on ITV as well, so I guess what I’d want to do now is to get a win for the horses who have been struggling."
Spartakos got the better of Sin E Shekells in a photo-finish and Scott believes the soft ground was crucial to the victory.
"When we got him out on the soft ground towards the end of last year he won a couple of times, but it’s been so dry recently and he’s not been able to perform," she added. "A bit of soft ground today and he’s done the business, but I do think he is ground-dependent.
"The ride from Sam James suited him because he is quite quirky and he sweats before his races, so having someone on him who knows him is an asset."
Flat White full of beans
Lucy Wadham was another trainer to welcome the soft ground as Flat White scored in the 2m handicap.
The five-year-old, who has not raced since December when seen over hurdles, finished seven lengths clear of her rivals with an easy success.
"The reason she is so fit is because we’ve been waiting two months to run her," Wadham said. "We needed that soft ground and it’s been in short supply lately."
