Charlie Longsdon experienced the fickle nature of racing yesterday as Germany Calling claimed the 2m4½f handicap chase half an hour after stablemate Atlantic Gold had suffered a fatal injury.

Losing a yard favourite in the preceding race took the gloss off the welcome return to form for Germany Calling, who was quoted by the sponsors at 33-1 for the BetVictor Gold Cup, but is set to be given a break until the spring.

"I thought he would win a decent race this summer at somewhere like Market Rasen, but it hasn't happened," Longsdon said of the 6-4 winner.
