Max Kendrick kicks on as Ratfacemcdougall obliges for proud mother
Max Kendrick, who rode out his claim at Perth on Wednesday, showed no signs of slowing down after securing another win on Ratfacemcdougall in the 3m1f handicap hurdle.
The winner was trained by Graeme McPherson – one of Kendrick's biggest supporters – and runs in the colours of the jockey's mother Carolyn, who thanked Perth winner Hunny Moon's trainer Fergal O'Brien for the assistance he has offered her son this season.
Kendrick was watching on away from the track and said: "Max's had a fantastic season – unbelievable. He's worked so hard and I'm really pleased. It's been a game changer these last 18 months.
"I think a number of things have helped including riding for Graeme and Fergal, while Kielan Woods and Paddy Brennan have been amazingly helpful to him at those yards.
"The biggest thing is the positivity and the fact people like Fergal are so incredibly constructive, while Mick Fitzgerald, Max's jockey coach, has also been amazing, as has fellow owner Andrew Brooks.
"Having that confidence and people supporting you is great – when people are negative it's a real drain. He's trying to learn and takes positives all the time."
As with everyone, the effects of the past year have hindered the owner's racing experience.
"It hasn't been great with lockdown because when I'm in the city the bookies aren't open or even allowing you to watch, which is a bit tricky," she said.
Despite this, both members of the Kendrick family have enjoyed their best seasons. The 25-year-old jockey, who lives in Little Rissington near Cheltenham, has partnered 31 winners, more than double his previous best, while his mother's horses have also performed well, recording a 25 per cent win rate, thanks in no small part to her son's success on the track.
