What better way is there to end your training career than with a winner at your local course? Totnes-based Martin Hill did just that after Scorpion Star made much of the running to land the finale at the Devon circuit.

Hill sent out 29 winners in his 20 years with a licence at the venue and the popular trainer was given a a very vocal three cheers as he welcomed Scorpion Star back into the number-one position in the winner's enclosure under Alexander Thorne after his three-quarters-of-a-length verdict over Third Estate.

Hill said: “You couldn't make it up – my last runner and a winner! I could not be more pleased and I almost wish I had not decided to call it a day, but that is it – you cannot go back on a decision like this.
