All eyes were on Supreme Novices' Hurdle runner-up Thomas Darby as he made his chasing debut at Warwick, but despite jumping well he found his main market rival Maire Banrigh too strong and was eventually beaten a length.

Maire Banrigh, who was given a first show of 33-1 for the Arkle by Paddy Power, was allowed an easy lead as Richard Johnson was keen to settle odds-on Thomas Darby in second, and she never looked back, jumping with supreme efficiency to fend off her talented rival.

Despite being a seven-year-old, it was just Maire Banrigh's sixth start under rules and the way she flew over her fences suggested there would plenty more victories coming her way on good ground.
