Loyalty pays off for Derek Shaw as veteran comes out on top

Bookmaker Paddy Power released an advert last week featuring Ryan Giggs's estranged brother Rhodri proclaiming that loyalty is dead.

However, it was another Paddy who proved that it was alive and well, as Paddy Mathers guided 12-year-old veteran Loyalty to success in the 7f Class 4 handicap – over eight years since the pair recorded their first win together in December 2010.

The gelding, who was having his 101st career start, has been trained by Derek Shaw since November 2010, and Shaw made his own pledge of loyalty last month to become the horse's owner.
