Longchamp juvenile contests fail to throw up a sparkling winner

After the recent fireworks at the Curragh and Newmarket, we were brought back down to earth at Longchamp on Sunday with below-par runnings of both juvenile Group 1s.

Royal Marine is a progressive and likeable young horse but, in winning the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere narrowly, he appeared to have landed on one of the weaker runnings of the recently-lengthened race. Accordingly he has been awarded a Racing Post Rating of 113.

The last four runnings of this Group 1 have been over a mile rather than seven furlongs – a decision that appears to have rather backfired.
