Lester statue gets the thumbs up from the legend himself
Lester Piggott is no stranger to Royal Ascot, having won a record 116 races at the meeting during his career in the saddle. He will now stand at the course in perpetuity following the unveiling of a statue of in his honour.
It is one of nine statues sculpted by William Newton, the first of which was unveiled at Epsom on Derby day by the Queen. Piggott was at Ascot and said: "It is a fantastic statue and it has a great likeness to me - William has done a very good job with it.
"I have enjoyed some great days at Royal Ascot. Everybody looks forward to this meeting. To win the Gold Cup once is special and I was very lucky to win the race on ten occasions.
"I rode some brilliant horses in the race including Sagaro, but probably the best was a filly called Gladness. It has been a very lucky course for me."
