Sharrabang does not make life easy for Stella Barclay, but he has proved his worth by accounting for all three of the trainer’s wins this year.

It was a first success over five furlongs for the five-year-old, after scoring over six and seven furlongs in his previous two wins.

Barclay said: "He’s a law unto himself, this horse. He’s very quirky and we have to train him on his terms. It’s his way or he doesn’t play ball at all.

"We didn’t think he’d suit the five furlongs at all. He won’t go further than two furlongs at home. He’s just a horse that doesn’t want to work."

Barclay saddled eight winners last year and is looking to add more successes to Sharrabang’s treble for her yard in the summer.

Sharrabang was partnered again by jockey Faye McManoman, who has ridden him in every race this year.

"Faye suits him down to the ground," Barclay added. "He’s got ability, he just doesn’t want to show it sometimes, and if anyone can get it out of him it’s Faye."

The win marked the third consecutive success at Carlisle for apprentice McManoman, who managed only fifth on her other ride of the day.

MacKenzie finds Dream success

Apprentice Ellie MacKenzie scored her first ride and winner at Carlisle in one swoop as Dream Composer won the 5f handicap.

It was a maiden win for the three-year-old and marked MacKenzie’s second win of the year from 18 rides.
