Juicy consolation prize for Meyler as Elliott wins first Plate
Donagh Meyler might have lost the ride on Road To Riches but the 20-year-old claimer still found an avenue to the big bounty yesterday.
Noel Meade had pencilled in Meyler to take 5lb off the hot favourite last week, but Bryan Cooper was keen to team up with the topweight so the Kilmacow jockey was left reeling in the 'what might have been' earlier this week. But the consolation prize proved even more juicy as he stormed down the outside on Lord Scoundrel to hand Gordon Elliott his first Galway Plate.
“I had him down for Road To Riches last week, but Bryan was keen to ride him so we didn't end up claiming off him," said Meade. "In fairness to the boys [Gigginstown] they promised him a ride in the race if he wasn't on Road To Riches and they stuck to that promise.
