Johnston amazed as Yalta blitzes rivals in course-record time

Mark Johnston filled one of the few remaining gaps in his Glorious Goodwood portfolio when Yalta scorched home a three-length winner of the Victoria Racing Club Molecomb Stakes in a new juvenile course-record time.

For good measure, the meeting’s most prolific trainer also saddled the runner-up, The Last Lion.

After Yalta’s 57.14 secs had taken 0.16 secs off the time set by Cotai Glory in the 2014 Molecomb, the trainer admitted he was “amazed” the colt had the speed to win over five furlongs, let alone break the record.
