Jim's old Jack triumphs on his latest foray to a favourite haunt

It is a long way from Uplawmoor, near Glasgow, to Ascot, nowhere near Glasgow, so after making the marathon journey south and winning the eve of King George card's £45,000 5f handicap, Jack Dexter is set to extend his stay by trying to scoop Saturday's £150,000 Gigaset International Handicap for Jim Goldie.

In the week in which the trainer retired veteran star Hawkeyethenoo, another Goldie golden oldie dazzled on a familiar stage, as this was Jack Dexter's 14th Ascot appearance.

Before his victory under William Carson, the eight-year-old's only course success had been in the now axed apprentices' handicap on British Champions Day, a meeting he has regularly graced.

"The ground worked out well for him today," said Goldie. "He loves some cut. When it was like that a few years ago only Slade Power beat him in the Champions Day sprint. He also won the race after Frankel won his final race here – but no one ever remembers that!
