'It's pretty sickening' - Aisling Oscar collared late on by Francesi and denied record-breaking ninth successive win

History will have to wait another day. Aisling Oscar was denied in his attempt to set a new British record for the most consecutive victories by a handicapper when his bid for a ninth straight win was scuppered by Francesi.

Aisling Oscar was back at Newcastle, the track where he had recorded seven of his eight wins, but all-weather champion trainer Tony Carroll was there to spoil the party in the mile handicap.

The Adrian Keatley-trained Aisling Oscar was fast away and allowed an uncontested lead. Turning for home he looked on his way to breaking the record, but claimer Myla Coppins was stalking him on Francesi, and delivered a late challenge to win by half a length.

Francesi was ending a run of three second-place finishes, the latest over course and distance only four days earlier.

As for Aisling Oscar, his name will remain in the history books alongside Ballynakelly, who was the last to win eight handicaps in a row between 1995 and 1996.

Keatley said: “We’re obviously disappointed. The horse who beat us probably should have won a few days ago and then he might not have run here, but that’s the luck of the game.

“We were unlucky to get beat. It would have been nice to break the record, but we gave it a good go. It didn’t suit us from the start as we jumped so well and nothing wanted to take us along – that was the first time he’d made the running in his nine runs.”

Oisin McSweeney, the disconsolate jockey of Aisling Oscar, told Sky Sports Racing: “It’s very disappointing for the streak to end like that, but he’s run another cracking race. It felt like a very long final furlong and it’s pretty sickening."
