'It's a very special day' - Ralph strikes on card in celebration of Lorna Brooke
Amateur jockeys took the spotlight at Ludlow as the course hosted a day in celebration of Lorna Brooke, featuring a race named in her honour.
Family and friends of Brooke, who died last month after a fall at Taunton aged 37, gathered at the course on Monday to remember the jockey’s success at her local track, the site of six of her wins.
The crowd turned out to watch the Lorna Brooke Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle, which was won by the favourite Our Rockstar for local trainer Alastair Ralph.
Ralph said: "It’s a very special day for us really. We’ve known Lorna for a long time, so it’s a big day at the course and for the team.
"Like Lorna, it’s our local track too, so we’ve seen her around here for a long time and she’s always supported Ludlow."
The win was also the first under rules for 18-year-old jockey Ben Bromley, son of Highflyer Bloodstock manager Anthony Bromley.
Andrews achievement
While Bromley rode his first winner as a claiming jockey, champion point-to-point rider Gina Andrews had her last, losing her claim in style as Takeit Easy cruised to victory in the feature hurdle race.
Andrews rode the favourite for trainer Pam Sly, who has been instrumental in the jockey's success under rules.
Sly said: "She started riding for me when she was 16 and she’s ridden loads of winners for me.
"Gina’s agent finishes at the end of month and wanted Gina to ride out her claim while he was still there.
"He rang me the day before and asked if Gina could ride, so I phoned Takeit Easy’s regular jockey Kielan Woods and he said to go on and do it. I’ve just rung him up to thank him for letting all this happen!"
It was a welcome high for the jockey, who returned to action in March after a horror fall at Cheltenham in December.
