'It's a dream' - Getaway Luv delivers first winner for Lizzie Quinlan
Friday: Catterick
Lizzie Quinlan achieved the first winner of her training career at the fifth attempt with Getaway Luv, a 16-1 shot who landed the 2m3f novice handicap chase under Quinlan's husband Sean. Getaway Luv was also the fledgling trainer's first runner on his previous start last month.
"It's brilliant to get a win so soon," Quinlan said. "He was my first runner and now first winner – it's fabulous.
"I was watching the race in the stands with Donald McCain and he was talking me through it because I couldn't watch. The win was for our first owners too, so it's even more special."
Quinlan took over from her mother Barbara Butterworth and trains around a dozen horses from their base at Bolton Mill, which suffered an ill-timed power cut right before the race.
"There was a power cut and my poor mum had to go up to my grandad's to watch the race," Quinlan said. "He's 95 and likes to watch Sean ride. Luckily, mum nipped up there just in time to see the success.
"It's a dream to have a winner so soon, I didn't think it would happen this quickly and it's great to not have that hanging over me."
Sean Quinlan completed a treble following further successes on Ladronne in the 3m1f handicap chase and You Some Girl in the bumper.
Merlin magic
Imperial Merlin made a striking start over hurdles with a 17-length win in the novice contest under Billy Garritty.
The five-year-old scored for John Quinn and is a half-brother to Secret Investor, who landed the Denman Chase in 2021.
