The Rolls-Royces are pulled up to the rails, row on row. The yachts are berthed on the invisible Solent, far away under a soft grey blanket of mist. Savile Row has been ransacked for bespoke rainwear, Hatton Garden is empty. High-end casinos have been alerted. If the bookmakers had a whip-round they could probably buy Manchester City, if not the whole of Manchester.

Tuesday was a good day to be a bookmaker. Winners at 100-1, 50-1, 33-1 and 20-1 meant that it was all one-way traffic in the cash department. Or was it?

You can never find a policeman when you need one, you can rarely find a Scotsman with a smile on his face, and as far as finding needles in haystacks is concerned, fuhgeddabahtit. But you can always find a bookmaker who says he's had a bad day.
