'It was pretty bloody cool' - Light N Strike lands £25,000 chase for Emma Lavelle after trainer's Newmarket winner

Emma Lavelle was still enjoying the thrill of saddling a winner at Newmarket on 2,000 Guineas day after Light N Strike provided success more typically associated with her operation in the feature 2m5f handicap chase.

Light N Strike had been second on his two previous starts at the track but went one better to justify 7-4 favouritism under Ben Jones.

“It’s taken him a little bit of time to get back to where he was but he did that well,” said Lavelle.

On her first win on the Rowley Mile, which came with Silver Ghost in a 7f handicap on Saturday, Lavelle said: “It was pretty bloody cool. We’re really lucky that we’ve got some nice Flat horses as well.

“Sometimes you go to those meetings and think ‘oh God, we’re a jumps trainer predominantly, turning up at the big boys' stage. It was great to take back some of the money.

“It was just nice to be there to see the Guineas horses in the paddock. Seeing good racing and seeing good horses is what it’s all about. I don’t care if it’s your day-to-day job or if you’re a once every now and then person going racing, it still gives you the same thrill to see those horses walking around the paddock.”

The £25,000 opener won by Light N Strike was named after five-time course winner Kauto The King, who was trained by Colin and then Joe Tizzard. The latter landed the 2m1f mares’ handicap hurdle with Sweet Caryline.

Skeltons strike

The Kielan Woods-ridden Roxanne made it two from two over hurdles since owners the Megson family switched her from Ed Dunlop to Dan Skelton.

Gwennie May Jem backed up last month’s Warwick success off a 7lb higher mark in the 2m½f novice handicap chase to complete a double for Skelton. Gwennie May Jem’s rider Harry Skelton later won the 3m2f handicap chase for former boss Paul Nicholls on Onethreefivenotout.
