Sunday: Chepstow

Connor Brace maintained a remarkable strike-rate as Gats And Co, trained by the rider's grandfather David, gained a smooth success in the 2m7½f handicap chase.

The 20-year-old was registering his seventh victory from his last 13 rides as the improving seven-year-old stretched 12 lengths clear of nearest rival Mr Katanga.

The trainer watched the action before dashing off to see Connor's 13-year-old brother Jude take part in the pony racing at the Mendip Farmers point-to-point meeting.

"Connor is doing really well and I'm looking forward to seeing his brother later to round off the day," said Brace.

"He has always had plenty of talent, but you need the luck and some decent horses to ride and he's getting that now."

Gats And Co is a half-brother to Brace's Paint The Dream, an impressive winner of the Greatwood Gold Cup at Newbury this month.

"I'm delighted to say I bred this one and Paint The Dream," said Brace. "They're always talking about Irish breeding, but I hope this shows what we can do over here.

"Gats And Co should stay further. He hasn't had much racing this winter so we'll probably keep him going."

Hard going for Scipion

Scipion made hard work of justifying odds of 1-4 in the maiden hurdle, and trainer Tom Lacey admitted he erred in allowing the six-year-old to take his chance.

"He's a fine horse and will go novice chasing, but he had a hard race in heavy ground at Haydock last time and I regret running him today," he said.
