'I'm not sure chasing is his game' - Gordon has doubts about Aucunrisque
Sunday: Uttoxeter
Aucunrisque justified odds-on favouritism on his chasing debut, but trainer Chris Gordon is not convinced his future lies over fences.
A Grade 2 winner over hurdles, Aucunrisque's jumping got better throughout the 2m novice chase, but the six-year-old did not do enough in his three-quarter length victory to confirm his chasing prowess in his trainer's eyes.
Gordon said: "He's great. He's a tough, genuine horse but I'm not sure chasing is going to be his game. He's not the biggest in the world and it's not locked and loaded that he's going to be a chaser from now on.
"We won't think about returning to hurdles for now as we would like to go chasing but, just on the back of that run, we're not 100 per cent committed to fences. We'll give him one more run and see how we go."
Gordon saddled Annual Invictus to finish runner-up in this race last year, and that one went on to win a novice event at Cheltenham on his next start, but the trainer is looking at a smaller track for Aucunrisque's next run.
He added. "We'll probably find a little novice somewhere at a smaller track, maybe over two and half miles."
Exciting prospects
The opening 2m maiden hurdle was won in great style by the Jonjo O'Neill-trained Are U Wise To That, who was produced to lead at the last before scoring by a comfortable five and a half lengths.
The Michael Scudamore-trained Mofasa made victory look even easier in the 2m4f maiden hurdle. The six-year-old travelled supremely well under Luca Morgan and just needed to be nudged out to record a seven-length win.
