'I was never going to jump off a Juddmonte horse' - Oisin Murphy lands the Lockinge and admits to a little luck

There was praise for Oisin Murphy's performance from John Gosden yet the winning rider was quick to admit his success in a spectacular running of Newbury's greatest Flat prize was partly attributable to a slice of good luck. It was also a reminder that fortune can be a fleeting friend.

This was a BoyleSports Lockinge Stakes full of star thoroughbreds and almost as many intriguing subplots connected to star riders. Murphy was central to one and the beneficiary of another.

Going into the race, it was hard to understand why Britain's four-time champion jockey was on Lead Artist, an 18-1 shot overnight, and not the much shorter-priced Tamfana, a filly he had assisted in four of her previous five starts, including to a Group 3 victory.
