'I think they're going to name a race after him' - popular veteran Tommie Beau sends Cartmel into raptures after 16th career win

Owner Simon Prout led the celebrations after Cartmel legend Tommie Beau registered a 16th career win and fourth at his favourite track when landing the Cavendish Cup for a second time.

Making his tenth start at Cartmel, Tommie Beau set out to make the 3m1½f handicap chase a stern test in the hands of conditional rider Ben Macey and, despite tiring on the long run from the final fence, fended off 15-8 favourite Caughtinyourtrance in the closing stages to send Prout and his supporters into a merry ditty in the winner's enclosure.

"This horse has been absolutely amazing," said the winning owner. "I keep telling everybody this is 16 wins now and every one has been a handicap over three miles or further – it has to be some sort of a record."

Purchased by his trainer, Seamus Mullins, for €11,000 in 2018, Tommie Beau took his earnings through the £230,000 barrier at the age of 11.

"We love Cartmel and the number of people who have come up to us and said, 'Good luck with Tommie' and sung the Tommie song has been incredible," Prout told Racing TV. "I think they're going to name a race here after him next year and it's just brilliant. He's just a legend and is such a credit to Seamus Mullins."

Bowen benefit

The 2m5f handicap chase turned into a benefit for the Bowen family with champion jockey Sean Bowen getting the better of his younger brother James as Pour Les Filles pounced late to beat 5-2 favourite King Roly, with the first and second trained by the riders' elder brother Mickey.
