'I don't have many words' - Sir Mark Prescott apprentice Fred Daly makes dream debut with 27-length winner
Fred Daly made a perfect start to his new career as a jockey after he stormed home a 27-length winner on his debut in the amateur riders' handicap.
The 16-year-old sailed clear from James Harding and Russian Ruler to strike on odds-on favourite Golden Shot, who was notching a second win this season for Sir Mark Prescott in the 1m6f contest.
"It's overwhelming really, I don't have many words," Daly told Sky Sports Racing. "I expected to get a lead of Mr Harding and it never came to me, so I decided coming out the bend just to stop waiting for everyone else and to make the running.
"A horse came upsides me round the bend and I just told myself not to worry. I just had to wait and I had no idea how clear I was in the end."
The success was also welcomed by his father and former trainer Declan Daly, who was present to celebrate his son's first winner.
"It's a very, very proud moment," he said. "The one thing Sir Mark said was don't look behind you. It's thanks to him and the whole team, they've done a great job looking after Fred."
Star success
Thewaytothestars ended the wait for a first success when she struck on the 15th attempt under Rossa Ryan.
Conditions turned heavy before the 7½f handicap but were unable to stop the four-year-old filly, who snatched victory for trainer Grace Harris by half a length from favourite Kynsa.
