'I don't get it' - Murphy praises Arc prize-money but small field bemuses him
Thursday: Fontwell
Two valuable £15,000 handicap chases were up for grabs on the card and Pat Murphy was thrilled to win one of them with course specialist Galtee Mountain.
Owned and bred by Murphy, Galtee Mountain was given a "fantastic ride" by Page Fuller to score by three and a quarter lengths and pick up a fourth career win at the Sussex track.
Murphy said: "Everyone keeps telling me he loves Fontwell, but this is where the races for him are.
"Arc has boosted prize-money for several lower-grade races and I think he has won around £16,000 in three runs. That's quite incredible for a horse rated in the 90s.
"Everyone moans about prize-money and we end up in a 0-110 race with £7,000 for first place and there are five runners – I don't get it. That said, if they keep putting up the prize-money I'll keep trying to take it."
Based in East Garston near Lambourn, Murphy was saddling his fifth winner of the campaign, his best since the 2009-10 season.
He added: "I'm jumping out of bed like a gazelle each morning. Joe Quinlan came in as my assistant this season with some horses and owners and I hope we can get a joint-licence soon.
"I've been with Galtee Mountain since the second he was born and it's far more rewarding because you're taking a bigger risk breeding and keeping them. Like a mug, you get sucked in by these horses and I never attempted to sell him, but he's paying his way nicely now."
