'He's worth every ounce of his claim' - father's pride in Armson's rise
Wednesday: Uttoxeter
Seeing your offspring excel is a thrill for any parent, and trainer Richard Armson was beaming with pride after watching his son Philip give a bold front-running ride to Texard in the feature 2m4f handicap chase.
Armson extended his lead over Kevin Brogan to three in the early stages of the conditional jockeys' championship with a 28-length success on the Judith Wilson-owned frontrunner.
Texard's victory took Armson's record to 11 winners from 54 mounts for his boss David Pipe this season.
Armson snr said: "I'm very proud of him, he's doing very well and just needs to keep knuckling down and keep the momentum going. He did a lot of hard work on ponies as a youngster that has made him as good as he is.
"Fair play to Mr Pipe for giving him a hell of an opportunity – a lot of conditionals get one ride every so often to keep them sweet, but Phil keeps getting put on them and he's certainly in the right place.
"It's brilliant to watch his progress, but I can hardly get him to ride mine now. I have to try and work out where he's going and whether he can ride – he's worth every ounce of his claim."
Major success
Looking to get involved in racehorse ownership? Ursa Major Racing Club is just the ticket according to trainer Mark Walford.
Walford trains eight horses for Ursa Major, who offer shares at affordable prices, and celebrated success with recent recruit Fenna's Loss in the 2m4f maiden hurdle under Sean Quinlan, taking his record to 2-2 for connections since coming from Charles Byrnes.
The winning trainer said of the racing club: "They're a great bunch and real good value – they give owners so much information it's unbelievable. It's a way to get people involved in racing that's affordable for nearly anyone and they're getting some great days out.
"Fenna's Loss is a very strong traveller but doesn't do a lot when he hits the front. He's more of a winter horse, but I hate giving them a holiday when they're winning!"
First-class result
Thomasina Eyston received the perfect boost prior to receiving her university degree results on Thursday when making a successful start as a conditional on her first ride for new boss Neil Mulholland aboard Agent Saonois in the 2m handicap hurdle.
Eyston, who studied chemistry at Bristol University, only joined Mulholland on Monday – the same day she was granted her conditional licence having previously ridden as an amateur - and led home a 1-2 for the yard by beating stablemate Castle Quarter by two and a half lengths.
Eyston said: "I've had to be quite patient as an amateur, either getting rides in amateur races or being lucky enough for someone to put me up in a pro race, so I'm thrilled to join Neil's. It's a super place with lots of horses and opportunities."
Mulholland bookended the card with the Sam Twiston-Davies-ridden The Turtle Said landing the 2m4f novice handicap hurdle.
