Zaltalla recorded a first career win at the 16th attempt when denying 25-1 shot Buttercross Flyer by half a length in the 7f apprentice handicap.

The five-year-old came out on top in a bunch finish under Tommie Jakes to score for trainer Michael Attwater, who has now won with three of his last four runners.

Attwater was full of praise for the apprentice, telling Sky Sports Racing: “It was a great ride from Tommie. He’s one of the most underused claimers, which I don’t want to say too many times as he’s still got a few left of his 5lb claim and I want to use them all. He should be getting a lot more rides.

"This horse is awkward, but he got him into a great spot and kicked at the right time. His agent was pushing me to use him, but I sort of resisted. After a while we gave him a go and things have not stopped going right since we did.”

Brace for Billy

Invited won the 7f handicap for Amo Racing, who were continuing their fine form after an excellent weekend in Ireland.

Ridden by Billy Loughnane, the three-year-old took the lead in the final furlong and stayed on to win by a neck for trainer George Boughey.

Loughnane also won the 1m1f fillies' handicap on the Ian Williams-trained Typical Woman, who came with a late run to upset 4-5 favourite Charming Princess.

Girl power

Newcomer Arlo’s Girl ended a lengthy barren run for Newmarket trainer Joseph Parr when running out a shock 25-1 winner of the 5f fillies’ novice.

The  daughter of Harry Angel scored by three lengths under Darragh Keenan to give Parr his first success since February.
