There was a moment, about two and a half furlongs out in the September Stakes, when Kempton burst into life, the crowd responding generously as Constitution Hill loomed large on the outside of the field under a confident-looking Billy Loughnane.

A chorus of voices shouting "come on Billy" rang through the grandstand, but almost as soon as it looked as though the horse everyone had come to see was going to take his unbeaten record at Kempton to five, the music stopped.

Whether it was a lack of race fitness on his return to competitive action after five months or the simple fact he was pitching in against horses with genuine Group 1 aspirations on the Flat, the big horse with the even bigger following could not muster the speed to go through with his challenge.
