It takes less than a minute to dash down York’s five-furlong course but Tony Hamilton needed even less time than that to know Mr Lupton was going to win the £50,000 MansionBet Sprint Handicap.

Sitting out the back on the Richard Fahey-trained five-year-old having missed the start, Hamilton believed he had his opponents covered. And with a late surge he did. Just.

“This trip is sharp enough for him and they went quick, but even two furlongs down I knew I’d pick them up,” said Hamilton. “He’s a good horse and to be fair loves these big handicaps – they go a really good gallop and he can pick them off.”
