Halford doubles up as well-bred Orchid Gardens gains deserved breakthrough

Mick Halford had been rattling the crossbar for the past week, with three seconds and three thirds since his previous winner a fortnight ago, but got back on the scoresheet with a double, highlighted by a deserved breakthrough for Orchid Gardens.

The well-bred three-year-old filly, a half-sister to 2012 Prix de l'Abbaye heroine Wizz Kid, made it tenth time lucky in the mile maiden under Sam Ewing as 11-8 favourite, having been placed on seven previous occasions.

Halford said: "It's great to get her head in front as she hadn't been doing anything wrong. She enjoyed the surface and Sam's claim was a help, he's riding very well."
