Halcyon Spirit delivers maiden victory as parting gift for Marcus Tregoning

After a series of close seconds and thirds, Halcyon Spirit gave trainer Marcus Tregoning a satisfying parting gift as he finally got his head in front at the eighth time of asking in the mile maiden auction.

The Halcyon Thoroughbreds-owned three-year-old will head for the Horses in Training Sale after prevailing from hot favourite Wonder Elmossman in a head-bobbing finish.

Tregoning said: "He's still learning and it's taking him a long time but he's always in the money and heads to the sales now. He'll be a great buy for someone.

"Sometimes they need a bit of a confidence boost, the visor has really helped him and it was a great ride from Dougie [Costello], so we're pleased."

Quick turnaround

The Ali Stronge-trained Storm Melody could only manage sixth at Wolverhampton on Monday but bounced back in spectacular fashion less than 24 hours later to slam his rivals by two and three-quarter lengths in the 5f handicap.

Jockey Rab Havlin, who rode a double thanks to Emblem Empire's victory in the 1m2f novice, told Sky Sports Racing: "With these sprinters you can get away with it and he was fine this morning so we thought we'd bring him. He broke nicely and he was able to pinch it when quickening round the bend."

Doyle at the double

William Buick drew a blank from his five rides as he attempts to chase down Oisin Murphy but it was a better day for Hollie Doyle, who doubled up on Miquelon in the mile handicap and Retrospect in the 2m handicap.
