Good Ball earned a quote of 33-1 with Paddy Power for the JCB Triumph Hurdle after winning the introductory hurdle, but Paul Nicholls is thinking further ahead for the strapping son of globetrotting Flat performer Doctor Dino.

The 11-time champion trainer reckons the three-year-old will be an awesome prospect over fences next season and was pleasantly surprised by the result.

"He's not been flashy at home," said Nicholls. "He was always going to be favourite because he was second in France, but sometimes when they come over they take time to acclimatise. We'll find a nice race for him in six weeks, but ultimately he'll make a really nice three-mile chaser – he nearly wants three miles now."

The Ditcheat trainer, on the mark in the card's Grade 1 Challow Novices' Hurdle, also struck in the 2m4½f handicap hurdle with Calva D'Auge, who was ridden by amateur Angus Cheleda.

Nicholls added: "Someone lost their claim or had it reduced the other day and Angus came up to me and said, 'Don't forget, I can claim 7lb – use me'. I told him not to worry and since then he's not stopped having winners; he sits quiet on horses and they run for him.

"He had a bad fall when he was with Colin [Tizzard], but is riding very well and is a good lad. He's a great person to have in the yard and I dare say he'll end up being pupil assistant or something one day."

Dream on for Brace

Connor Brace is a young jockey going places and he produced a contender for ride of the day when pinching the novice handicap chase on Paint The Dream, who runs in the colours of his grandfather David.

Winning trainer Fergal O'Brien admitted the handicapper had given the six-year-old a chance with a rating of 137, but he also praised the man on board.

He said: "Connor gets on great with the horse and I'm very lucky to have him, Liam Harrison and Max Kendrick, who are all guided by Paddy Brennan, which is good some days and not so good other days!

"It's great to have that calibre of boys riding for you and that's not just on the track, but at home in the yard when they can tell you so much."

Bargary on scoresheet

The Mandarin Handicap Chase went to Amateur, but there was nothing novice about the accomplished ride he got from Jamie Bargary.

Bargary was partnering just his second winner of a season interrupted by a busted elbow. He said: "It's massive. I've had a relatively slow start after the resumption and then I got hurt and was out for seven weeks. It's been very slow since then, but I have to thank my new agent Ian Popham for getting me this ride today.

"It means a lot as I've had a huge restart this season and started going to a lot of new people [to ride out]. I'm in a rebuilding process and if winners like this come along, I'm quite happy to take them."
