That wasn't in the script. The first running of the Malcolm Jefferson Memorial Chase was supposed to be stroll round in preparation for the Gold Cup for Definitly Red, who was sent off at 1-6 to beat sole rival Captain Redbeard and make it three out of three for the season.

But it didn't work out that way, for instead of breezing to the expected easy win over a rival who was meeting him on 11lb worse terms than on official ratings, he proved rather leaden-footed in the closing stages and went down by two lengths.

Credit though to the winner who once again has the Randox Health Grand National as his target, having unseated rider Sam Coltherd at Foinavon first time round in the race last April.
