It was a bittersweet day for trainer Peter Crate as veteran Sandfrankskipsgo sprung a 25-1 surprise victory in the 5f handicap at Lingfield in what proved to be the ten-year-old's final run.

The mount of Pat Dobbs held off a late challenge from rivals Aquadabra and Edged Out to score by a short head, his 11th victory from 87 runs, and Crate revealed it was to be the fitting finale for his stable stalwart.

"I’m rather sad about it but absolutely delighted as well,” he said. "I’ve bred him and trained him, he’s a wonderful horse and deserves to retire. An absolute gent and a big giant, he’ll probably go RORing, dressage, that sort of thing."
