When John Ferguson swapped his tweed for pinstripe to become Godolphin's chief executive last year the black silks his jumpers ran in might have gathered dust, but his amateur rider son Alex was keen to stay involved and carried those colours to victory on the well-regarded High Bridge in the maiden hurdle.

Last term's Champion Bumper sixth is now with Ben Pauling, whose team Alex Ferguson joined in the summer.

"Alex came and spent a day with us and loved the yard," said Pauling. "He wanted to further his career and has been a breath of fresh air. He's tall, but very light and will be a useful weapon for us.
