Some big names of the past were conjured up by winning connections after the bumper and novice hurdle, with wistful wishes that both horses would go on to emulate them.

Didtheyleaveuoutto, who won the bumper, will be a sub-editors nightmare if he can go on to match the accomplishments of another JP McManus horse also trained by Nick Gifford.

“He looks like Straw Bear. He’s the same chestnut with a big chest, and if he’s half as good as him I’d be delighted,” said Gifford, whose former stable star won a Fighting Fifth and Christmas Hurdle.
