Elizabeth Gale's Flat transition goes from strength to strength with first Ascot win

Knights Gold was steered to a 12-1 victory by Elizabeth Gale, who made excellent use of her 5lb claim in an ultra-competitive handicap.

It was a thrilling photo-finish as the line came just in time for Richard Newland and Jamie Insole’s runner.

Gale made some smart decisions in-running, most notably switching to the far side rail, which helped guide the gelding to victory.

Newland told Sky Sports Racing: “It’s full credit to the yard. That’s his fourth win of the year and after the last one we thought we’d try something tougher and throw him in at the deep end.

“I thought it was an exceptionally competitive race today and Elizabeth gave him a great ride. The owner had told her if she wins, he’d buy her a new saddle.”

Gale added: “Jamie said ride him like he’s the best horse in the race – and we did. He’s so tough and just won’t lay down.”

It was a first winner at Ascot for the apprentice and conditional jockey, who said: “I’m happy to say I’m now looking to focus more on the Flat.”

Jack Callan also rode his first winner at the prestigious track, scoring in the mile handicap on Unassuming for George Boughey.

Hat-trick for Chilli

Chilli Queen completed a hat-trick by landing the feature 1m4f fillies’ handicap.

This was her turf debut, but she answered all questions in style under Ray Dawson for trainer Emma Lavelle, who is now showing a £16 profit to a £1 level stake with her runners on the Flat this year.
