Exciting apprentice Lewis Edmunds chose an opportune moment to ride his 50th winner as Confessional swooped late in the feature 5f handicap worth £20,000.

Edmunds, grandson of trainer John Balding, is attached to Kevin Ryan but has been getting plenty of outside rides, the landmark victory coming on the Tim Easterby-trained ten-year-old, who got up late to nail trailblazing track specialist Blithe Spirit by three-quarters of a length.

"I knew they'd go a good gallop and, although it got a bit tight, he took off for me," said the 18-year-old, who reduced his claim to 3lb. "He's a bit of a thinker at times but has won quite cosily in the end."
