Michael Dods knows all about harnessing speed – but even he has been tested by the temperament of Dakota Gold.

All the planning and preparation became worth it however, after the Doug Graham and Ian Davison-owned sprinter scorched home in the feature £50,000 5f handicap in the hands of Connor Beasley.

Dods, who dispatched wife Carole down to the start to oversee the loading process, said: "He's been difficult as he's a bit of a hot head. He's bad in the gates and is allowed to go in last. He was probably in there no more than five seconds and then he was away."
