Unsurprisingly bookmakers were falling over themselves to shorten the odds of Cracksman for the Investec Derby after the horse he narrowly pipped in Epsom’s Derby Trial, Permian, ran out a convincing winner of the Dante.

Some have Cracksman as joint-favourite now, but at four times the price in a couple of places perhaps the Dante winner is being overlooked.

You would be hard pressed to say his three-quarter-length victory over Benbatl was the performance of a Derby winner, but has that not been the case for all the Derby trial winners so far?
