Del Mar calling for Ulysses as Stoute admits Enable is 'too good'
Cloth Of Stars claims yet another placed effort for Arc master Fabre
It was a case of different day, similar result as, just as in the King George, Ulysses and Jim Crowley had no answer to Enable.
Ulysses was prominent early and battled on well to take third, with Cloth Of Stars splitting the two Newmarket-trained stars.
"I never left Frankie’s tail and we've run a good race," said Crowley. "There were no excuses. He’s a super horse and the winner is exceptional."
Sir Michael Stoute has amassed a fair collection of horses to have finished in the money in the Arc to go alongside the victory of Workforce seven years ago.
"It’s another very good, sound race," said the trainer. "I’d prefer Ulysses on a faster surface – you’ve just got to look at his action – but the filly is too good for him. We’ll think about America."
Alan Cooper, racing manager for the Niarchos family, gave the clearest indication the Breeders' Cup Turf would be the racing swansong for Ulysses.
"He’s a super horse," said Cooper. "He got a little bit lit up in the early stages and that might have cost him second. All being well we go to California and that will be his last race."
Fabre best of the rest once again
Cloth Of Stars has never stopped progressing from his eighth-placed run in Harzand's Derby and ran the race of his life to be second.
"I'm delighted with him," said trainer Andre Fabre, who has saddled at least one placed horse in six of the last nine Arcs. "They didn't go that fast but he settled well, so I can't complain. He was a bit fresh last time when he fought the bridle. But there's not much of an excuse and we were beaten by the best.
"We'll discuss it with Sheikh Mohammed, but I think he's done enough for the year. He started the season early and he's still here at the end."
Order Of St George best of O'Brien armada
Order Of St George chased early leader Idaho all the way to the home turn and stuck on well for fourth, while the Ballydoyle hare ended up eighth, just in front of Winter, who was never a factor.
"He ran a great race but he’s not a mile and a half horse," said Order Of St George's rider Donnacha O'Brien. "The only reason he runs so well over that sort of trip is because he’s that good a horse, but he’s a stayer. He lacks the change of gear of the winner, but stuck at it."
Trainer Aidan O'Brien added: "Order Of St George ran very well and we’ll look at the two-miler at Ascot. Ryan [Moore] was happy with Winter and didn’t give her a hard time. We might come back to a mile and a quarter at Ascot. This was probably far enough for her."
Brametot pleases Rouget but Japan out of luck again
Brametot overcame any worries about his tardy starts and was always handy under Cristian Demuro, eventually beaten six and a half lengths in fifth.
"I don't know what he'll do now and nothing is decided about his future, but I'm very happy with his race," said trainer Jean-Claude Rouget.
Alain de Royer-Dupre reported tenth-placed Zarak "never acted on the ground", while Japanese hopes sank in the soft ground as Satono Diamond could finish only 15th.
"The ground always worried me because he's always leaning forward low to the turf," said Satono Diamond's rider Christophe Lemaire. "I'm disappointed because I hoped he'd run better but I'm not that surprised."
