Dee Ex Bee went into the history books as the first two-year-old to get a free entry into the Investec Derby under a new initiative by hosts Epsom.

The Totepool Conditions Stakes over a 1m½f was identified as a suitable race to offer what is essentially the £9,000 entry fee for racing's most famous race.

Epsom's director of racing Andrew Cooper explained: "This race was won by Christophermarlowe [who won the Blue Riband Trial the following season] a few years ago and Defoe [who ran in the St Leger] was second last year.
