In the midst of graduation season, hopes of welcoming back York's homecoming queen with a win were thwarted by a matter of inches.

Queen Kindly, a daughter of Frankel trained locally by Richard Fahey, had shown herself at the top of her class when landing the Lowther Stakes here last August, beating Falmouth Stakes winner Roly Poly.

Things had not gone to plan in top company elsewhere since then but returning to York for the Group 3 Unibet Summer Stakes looked a winning move as she came with a strong late challenge under Paul Hanagan.
