Brian Hughes was the toast of favourite backers as Cyrus Darius plucked victory from the jaws of defeat in the most eye-catching performance of the day.

The 5-2 chance all but threw the race away with several clumsy jumps in the 2m4½f handicap chase, but the determined Hughes was never going to give up and carefully settled his mount again.

He still had several lengths to make up at the final fence but found an exhilarating change of gear to catch Arctic Gold in the final 100 yards.
