Danny Whizzbang enters RSA Chase fray after Newbury fireworks on chase debut

Paul Nicholls would not have been tempted by that old adage, 'back the outsider of three', going into the Ladbrokes-backed John Francome Novices' Chase. Danny Whizzbang came third in the betting and his trainer believed he would finish third. What happened in the Grade 2 contest came as a lovely surprise.

Given a hold-up ride by Harry Cobden, last season's dual novice hurdle winner showed the benefit of a wind operation to beat odds-on favourite Reserve Tank by four lengths.

"That surprised me," said Nicholls, whose Angela Tincknell-owned six-year-old earned a 16-1 RSA Chase quote from Ladbrokes.
"Harry said he felt like a hunter through the race but then he turned into the straight and took off. I expected him to finish third here and improve for the experience – and he will improve massively."
