It might only have been a run of the mill 1m4f seller but Dougie Costello will not see it that way as the success of the odds-on favourite Retrieve ended a long losing run at the east Midlands venue for the rider.

Former jump jockey Costello had gone 23 previous rides without a victory on the Flat at the circuit and it was anything but plain sailing for those punters brave enough to step in and take the short odds as he had to be at his strongest to get the nine-year-old home.

By contrast, Retrieve’s trainer Jamie Osborne now boasts a 33 per cent strike-rate at the course as he is now eight wins from 24 runners in the past few years. And he will also be happy to retain the winner for 4,000 guineas at the subsequent auction.
