'Class' Brian Hughes helps Pogsons reach personal best as joint-licence holders
Friday: Uttoxeter
Adam Pogson lauded Brian Hughes as the fruitful link-up between the Nottinghamshire-based stable and the champion jockey continued when George Mallory struck in the 2m handicap hurdle.
The six-year-old was fifth at the track earlier in the month when just two obstacles were jumped but he relished the more conventional contest this time to score at 12-1.
It was a fifth winner of the season for Pogson, who joined his father Charles on the licence in 2020, with a career-best season as a training partnership already secured in July.
Pogson said: "The hurdles were taken out for the low sun last time. When he got to the first down the back he thought it was a Flat race, he jumped those two down the back terrible.
“It’s obviously helped George Mallory today [the hurdles being back]. He was keen but Brian is class isn’t he, he got him settled. I’m very pleased with him, he jumped a lot better today and the horses are running well. Larch Hill won last Sunday and when they’re in form you could win with the yard dog.
"The strike-rate's really good and Brian’s had 15 rides for us and he’s had eight winners so, like I say to his agent, when I put him on something I think it’s got a decent chance."
Doubles all around
Hughes reached 40 winners for the season when completing a double aboard Donald McCain’s 9-4 favourite Latino Fling in the 2m4f mares’ handicap hurdle.
Also enjoying a double was Jonjo O’Neill, as Biowavego got off the mark in the opening maiden hurdle under son Jonjo Jr before Nick Scholfield guided Tedham to a first win since January 2019 in the 3m novice handicap chase.
