Charity the main winner in Sussex as cancer raceday raises over £45,000
Sunday: Plumpton
Charity was the big winner at the Sussex track as the special raceday organised by Jamie Moore raised more than £45,000 and involved jockeys' in pink breeches and an appearance by 2014 Champion Chase winner Sire De Grugy.
The fixture raised money for the Sussex Cancer Fund and the Western Sussex Breast Care Centre, causes close to the heart of Moore whose wife Lucie was treated for breast cancer in 2020.
There was no more poignant winner on the seven-race card than Bourbali, who ran out an easy winner for Brendan Powell in the 2m4½f handicap hurdle.
The even-money chance is trained by Colin Tizzard, who lost his daughter Kim Gingell to cancer two years ago.
Powell said: "Kim was a massive cog in the Tizzard operation and I'm sure she's looking down and smiling after that. Its a great initiative by Jamie and hopefully it's the first of many."
Cannon fires in a four-timer
The Moores had runners in six of the seven races and Jamie was in pole position to get the charity raceday off to a flyer on 2-7 chance Saligo Bay in the opening maiden hurdle, but Alto Alto did not read the script.
The win kicked off a four-timer for Tom Cannon and a treble for trainer Chris Gordon.
Gordon and Cannon went on to complete a hat-trick together including when the progressive Hiway One O Three completed his own hat-trick in the 2m4½f handicap hurdle.
Gordon said: "I felt a bit like a party pooper in the first but this horse did that well. He has wind issues so we might run him on a flat track next."
Cannon brought up the treble when Good News landed the 3m1f handicap hurdle and completed a memorable day when Presenting A Queen landed the mares' bumper at 8-13.
